Kindermusik Convention comes to a close....
It's been one heck of a week! We've made new friends -- renewed old friendships -- met educators from all over the word -- and we've learned a LOT. My favorite? Jill Molli at this morning's general session! Oh -- and Skip Ewing's concert on Thursday nite was pretty darn good as well! Check out his cd on iTunes -- Indian Elephant Tea -- he's a special guy who puts a special twist on B-I-N-G-O!!! I attended two FANTASTIC breakout sessions today -- one led by my friend Jeannie Castillo from the Philippines on Fundamentals and Mentoring and another led by Adrian Miller and Julee Kowallis on the loyalty survey and how to respond to promoters, passives, and detractors. As I type right now, our educators are finishing up their birthday banquet and then will go upstairs to Ballroom A to continue the celebrations. I hope that many more of you will share tidbits of information that you learned from the many, MANY breakouts that were offered during this year's convention -- share them here on the blog -- or share them on facebook (have you created YOUR facebook page yet?).
My feet were killing me (IMAGINE THAT!) -- so I took a break from the banquet -- came back to the room to put on some comfortable shoes -- and back I'll go very soon to continue the celebration! I'll probably be the ONLY one there in jeans but at least my FEET will be SMILING! Ahhhh.....
Kindermusik is THIRTY years YOUNG this year! Please join me from wherever you are right now and sing Happy Birthday to Kindermusik! You are what makes Kindermusik so very special. You are so very passionate about what you are doing -- and you know in your heart of hearts that you are touching the lives of children with the gift of music -- and this gift will be carried on for years to come.
Gotta get back to the birthday bash! More soon ---
Connie

Don't forget airport transportation -- the more who reserve in advance, the lower the price!!!
As posted previously, Whitehorse Transportation (www.ridewhitehorse.com) has agreed to provide transportation for our educators who are flying into and out of RDU International Airport. And, you will received their PREFERRED VIP rate. Note that if you are planning to take a "typical cab" at the airport, you will most likely be charged $39 each way (or more) and it is just that -- a "typical cab" -- WHITEHORSE IS DIFFERENT! :-)
Here's the Whitehorse pricing schedule: $45 if picking up ONE passenger ONLY, $50 TOTAL if picking up 2 passengers ($25pp), or $55 TOTAL for 3 passengers ($18.50pp). For four passengers, the charge is $15 per person. For FIVE or MORE passengers, the rate is $12 per person. Complicated? Yup -- but this is still a REAL DEAL for our educators. Whitehorse will be combining reservations so that they can get as many folks into a vehicle (comfortably) to keep your prices down. Their vehicles are clean -- new -- many have leather seats -- and are SAFE and comfortable -- you won't be disappointed. So, email reservations@ridewhitehorse.com today and reserve your spot. They will require a credit card to hold your reservation, but your credit card will NOT be charged until you are picked up (or dropped off). If questions, let me know at cschor@kindermusik.com.
REMINDER: you'll need to reserve your transportation ahead of time. So -- again -- here's what you need to do:
1) Call Whitehorse Transportation at 888.62-HORSE (888.624.6773) ... or email Whitehorse Transportation at reservations@ridewhitehorse.com
2) Request the KINDERMUSIK CONVENTION rate
3) Advise Whitehorse of your date and time of arrival and your date and time of departure (along with your airline information)
4) Whitehorse will include this information in your transportation reservation and will send you a confirmation via email
5) Whitehorse will require a credit card to guarantee service, so please have that available when making your reservation
6) Whitehorse will pick you up just outside of baggage claim -- where you will find a PURPLE Pre-arranged Services station (pictured above) -- you can't miss it -- there's one outside of both terminals at RDU.
This is an extraordinarily LOW rate as Whitehorse has a contract with the Marriott to provide ONE WAY service at $45.00 each way (that’s what I had to pay when Lee gave me a ride from the Marriott back to RDU last Friday – it was money well spent by KI, though, as I was able to find this deal to pass on to you!!!).Please be sure to share this information with all educators who will be flying into RDU. This is much less expensive than renting a car and paying for parking in downtown Raleigh.
Of course, if you have questions, let me know -- I can be reached at cschor@kindermusik.com.
Until then,
"Convention Connie"

CHEAP FLIGHTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE TO RDU
AND -- did you know that we're accepting registrations for convention THROUGH October 31? Though -- if you're planning to attend any of the "reservation-only" meals, we need to have your registration by October 28th.
So -- it's NOT TOO LATE. Go to www.expedia.com to see if you can find a DEAL on airfare! We can find you a room that's convenient to the Convention Center -- I promise -- it may not be at the Marriott -- but it'll be affordable and convenient!
What's that NIKE slogan? "Just do it!" Do it today!
Until then,

Kindermusik Angels: Please share YOUR story...
Kindermusik has recently commissioned artist Andrea Eberbach to create what we feel is reflective of how precious our Kindermusik Angels truly are. And, we are using this artwork in a Kindermusik Angels memory book whose pages will be dedicated to these precious little angels. Please help us remember these children, as we create this memory book. We have a few stories that have been provided thus far, one of which is about Anastasia Jane Marie Lee, a former student of educator and Maestro Katie Henderson, whose story you will read below. Email cschor@kindermusik.com today for a “My Kindermusik Angel” form which you can use in providing the details to us about your precious angel.
Anastasia Jane Marie Lee: Anastasia came to Kindermusik at the age of 11 months, the third child of Bob & Xandra (pronounced “Shandra”) Lee. Though Anastasia had disabilities from birth, these advanced when, at the age of 6 months, during the course of open heart surgery, she stopped breathing, and the lack of oxygen resulted in brain damage and a myriad of disabilities which would cause complications that, eventually, led to her death.
Anastasia’s mom shared with vivid recall riding in the car with Anastasia – her screaming uncontrollably - and how she would immediately cease to cry when her Kindermusik CD began to be played. Similarly, I remember how Anastasia responded instantly to music in class; Unable to walk, she would “scootch” across the Kindermusik floor; the moment she heard music, particularly the “Hello” song, her eyes would open wider than a child’s possibly could, I thought. I can still clearly picture the largest, most beautiful eyes I have ever seen on a child in the face of Anastasia. The corner of her lips, too, would curl up in a smile, and as teacher, you knew, without a doubt, that she was right there with you, and at least, for that moment, there was nothing but joy in her heart. What she did not know is that the joy in her heart spilled over to mine each and every week we shared class together. I never left a class with Anastasia in it that I didn’t feel a great sense not only of renewal of purpose in our mission of changing lives with music, but, even more, I felt the love which music alone can bring to hearts, and the power that it has to connect, no matter what the circumstances of life.
Anastasia died on September 2, 1999 at the age of 23 months. Interestingly enough, the Lees have always referred to Anastasia as their little angel, and have collected many “reminder” angels over the years since her death. The Lees have since had three more children, all of whom are currently enrolled in Kindermusik. Because of Anastasia, Kindermusik lives on in the Lee family and beyond.* Each week, when I see Rem, her 2 1/2 year old brother, in my class, I think, too, of Anastasia. She is looking down on us, as a constant reminder of the power of music to connect, nurture and sustain in a powerful way. She reminds me, as an angel from above, of the incredible privilege we have, as Kindermusik educators, to be able to share the treasure of music with children and families across the world. Thank you, Anastasia!
Personal note from Katie Henderson: By the way, Anastasia’s response to music, long ago, has fueled my personal mission to serve families of children with special needs. We did so, officially, last fall, in a collaborative effort with an agency in our area who serves such families exclusively. We raised nearly $1,000 to sponsor children last year. The Lees were the very first to step up and contribute a full scholarship, in Anastasia’s memory, to an at risk child, for the fall, 2007 semester. Anastasia’s gifts will live on!

Convention: What to Pack and What to Wear!!
I’ve received a few emails asking questions about what to wear and what to pack! So – here’s what I suggest:
1) “Packing LIGHT is RIGHT!” With all of the new airline luggage restrictions, pack as light as you can. Here’s a link to an article in one of my favorite magazines, Real Simple, which includes some packing tips for you: http://www.realsimple.com/realsimple/gallery/0,21863,1709811,00.html
2) COMFORTABLE SHOES! You’ll be doing a lot of walking between the Marriott and the Convention Center. And, though the walkways are carpeted – it’s still important that you bring comfortable shoes to wear!!!
3) There are three events that I want to MAKE SURE you’re aware of so that – if you’d like to – you can dress appropriately:
a. Thursday evening, November 6: KinderDisco begins at 10:00pm. If you happen to have some 70’s apparel that you’re hoping to wear “one day,” this might be just the RIGHT time to put it on! Feel free to wear your favorite Saturday Night Fever “outfit” and plan to “get down and boogie” at the KinderDisco event that takes place immediately following the Skip Ewing concert. Be sure to stop by the Convention Store on Thursday evening as well where you may find Kindermusik employee owners dressed and ready to rock while you shop!
b. Friday evening, November 7: Sing and Dance Together – this is a strictly casual event. Dress as casual as you’d like for this event – wearing comfortable shoes – as you may want to get up and dance during this fundraising event for the Ruth D. Anderson Kindermusik Children’s Fund! We will, indeed, be singing and dancing together – and there will also be an auction with loads of items just waiting for your bid!
c. Saturday evening, November 8: On Saturday evening, you are invited to attend the final banquet dinner (must purchase ticket to attend) followed by the recognition event (open to all). We suggest semi-formal attire for this event. Semi-formal in MY dictionary means anything from Sunday-go-to-church-attire to sequins. This is completely up to you – you’ll find everything from pantsuits to dresses to cocktail attire.
4) Oh – and just a reminder – be sure to pack an extra bag for your convention store purchases! There will be CONVENTION-ONLY specials available to convention attendees of which you’ll want to take advantage! We will ship your purchases to you if you prefer (but shipping will be added to the total).
Feel free to email me with other ideas for blog postings! As we get closer to convention, I’m sure there will be loads of questions that need to be asked – and answered!
Until then,
“Convention Connie”

Just a few notes of interest: Tee Shirt QUILT, White Horse, Directions, and Parking Pass Winners!
2) White Horse Transportation update: There's been a bit of confusion re: the White Horse Transportation pricing schedule (my fault -- I'm sorry). If there are 3 or fewer people being picked up at the airport, the prices are as follows: $45 for one passenger, $50 total for 2 passengers, $55 total for 3 passengers. For four passengers, the charge is $15 per person. For FIVE or MORE passengers, the rate is $12 per person. Complicated? Yup -- but this is still a REAL DEAL for our educators. White Horse will be accepting reservations and will combine passengers -- so the more educators who call and reserve transportation, the more likely that you will receive a $15 or better rate. Their vehicles are clean -- new -- many have leather seats -- and are SAFE and comfortable. So, email reservations@ridewhitehorse.com today and reserve your spot. They will require a credit card to hold your reservation, but your credit card will NOT be charged until you are picked up (or dropped off). If questions, let me know at cschor@kindermusik.com.
3) Directions to the Convention Center: The Marriott Raleigh City Center is located at 500 Fayetteville Street and the new Raleigh Convention Center is located at 500 South Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC 27601 (they're less than 1 block apart). If you are driving to convention, please use http://www.mapquest.com/ as your guide! Mapquest is much better at directions than Convention Connie is!!!
4) WHO WON THE PARKING PASSES? Yep -- the drawing for the FIVE FREE PARKING PASSES was held yesterday -- and -- drum roll please -- the winners are: MARSHA NEAL, CANDY BANKS, CATHY SIEBERT, DONNA METLER, and SANDY YAGEL! CONGRATS!

NEED AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION? I HAVE A DEAL FOR YOU!
This is an extraordinarily LOW rate as Whitehorse has a contract with the Marriott to provide ONE WAY service at $45.00 each way (that’s what I had to pay when Lee gave me a ride from the Marriott back to RDU last Friday – it was money well spent by KI, though, as I was able to find this deal to pass on to you!!!).
Please be sure to share this information with all educators who will be flying into RDU. This is much less expensive than renting a car and paying for parking in downtown Raleigh.

Curious about the Raleigh Convention Center and Marriott facilities?

Click on the "Before and After" pix first -- THEN click on the "SLIDESHOW" icon at the top right of your screen to view the entire presentation with ease!
I think you'll agree that Raleigh is a MAGNIFICENT location for this year's convention! If you haven't already registered, it's not too late! Go to the teacher's lounge at http://www.kindermusik.com/ and REGISTER today! And -- to reserve your room at the Marriott Raleigh City Center, just call 919.833.1120 and request the KINDERMUSIK rate!
By the way -- the Marriott was kind enough to open up a few additional rooms for our block on the previously sold out Friday and Saturday nights! So -- don't delay -- reserve your room at the Marriott today!
Until then,

911 Reflection, contributed by the PKE blog
What began as a bright and sunny day here in Central Illinois has turned a bit dismal with the onset of a slow & steady rain. I find myself sitting at my desk and contemplating the events of 9-11-2001. (Exhaustion from the first week of classes may, too, have something to do with this state). Less than 1 month later in that year, Michael Dougherty was scheduled to visit our Midwest studio and my staff. I remember it vividly – wondering if he’d even make the trip. Flight times were still drastically reduced, and even the most avid of travelers was re-thinking the need to fly if it weren’t crucial. At a dinner with my staff (and Michael’s daughter, Frances, who got to accompany Dad on this trip), he talked to us about the need for Kindermusik. “In times like these”, he said, “We are reminded more than ever of the important work that we do.” Spoken from his heart, I remember being overcome with emotion, and a new passion and attitude for spreading the Kindermusik “word.” Helping families spend time together in a meaningful way, fostering a child’s growth and development, spreading love… Families NEED us! Children NEED us. It was much-needed fuel to forward our mission at that time.
In these economic times, and remembering, today, the tragic events of 9/11, we need to rekindle our passion, and boldly “sell” Kindermusik as the “SO MUCH MORE THAN MUSIC” that we know it is. We need not apologize to a parent for the investment in education that he will make for his child, and indeed for his entire family (while being sensitive, of course, to his need for options and help in making the experience possible). We must stand proud and confident in our knowledge of the potential we have to change the world with music. We must not give in to the excuses of tough economic times. Though tough times may require tough measures, investing in children is still at the top of any parent’s priority list. We need to embrace that and not be deterred….
I hope this finds your semester full of smiling little faces! I can’t wait to see you all in November at the Raleigh Convention - (An investment in your Kindermusik future).

RALEIGH CONVENTION PARKING!!! Don't Miss This Post!!!
I did some research on the Raleigh parking situation. The “deal” is that ALL parking decks and lots are owned by the City of Raleigh, which means they have a “monopoly” on what is charged for parking. Here’s what I learned:
Parking at the Marriott Raleigh City Center:
$12.00/day / on-site self parking (in parking deck below The Marriott)
$18.00/day / VALET parking (in parking deck below The Marriott)
Area parking decks convenient to the Marriott and the Convention Center:
$10/day / Lot #16 /City Center Parking Deck located at 429 S. Wilmington Street
$7-$9/day / Lot #47 / Performing Arts Deck located at 128 W. South Street*
*NOTE: only available if there are no activities taking place at the Performing Arts Center
Now, I have some REALLY good news for you! I have 5 FREE PARKING PASSES to give away via our blog! So -- email me at cschor@kindermusik.com or connieschor@aol.com (my personal email address) and let me know if you're interested in having your name in the drawing for one of these 5 FREE PARKING PASSES! We'll draw 5 names from the "hat" on Tuesday, September 30. This will be quite a savings for the 5 winners!
Until then,
Convention Connie
P.S. Have you registered for convention? Have you reserved your room at the Marriott? This is going to be the best EVER convention!

Raleigh TRIVIA!
Did you know . . .
- Raleigh lies in east-central North Carolina, where the hilly Piedmont region meets the flat coastal plain.
- Raleigh was founded in 1792 as North Carolina's capital city.
- It was named for Sir Walter Raleigh, who attempted to establish the first English colony on the shores of the new world in the 1580s.
- Raleigh is only state capital to have been planned and established by a state as the seat of state government.
- The city's founding fathers called Raleigh the "City of Oaks," and dedicated themselves to maintaining the area's wooded tracts and grassy parks.
- Raleigh is the largest city in a metropolitan area known as the Research Triangle. RTP stands for Research Triangle Park and is home to many large corporations including Glaxo-Smith-Kline Pharmaceuticals, IBM, Reichold Chemicals, UNC TV and Research Triangle Institute.
Check back soon for more Raleigh trivia! In the meantime, reserve your room at the BRAND NEW Marriott Raleigh City Center located at 501 Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh, NC. Just call Marriott group reservations at 866-260-1270 and request the KINDERMUSIK rate. Check out the new website here: http://www.marriottraleigh.com/

Planning for Convention!
If you missed our first Planning for Convention conference call on Tuesday, April 8, be sure to attend the next one scheduled for Wednesday evening, April 16, at 8:00pm. To register, check out the PDS calendar on the teachers lounge. All you have to do is click the live link and follow the instructions!
A bit of GREAT news to share with you TODAY! You can reserve your room at the Marriott City Center in Raleigh, NC now! Yes….even though the Marriott hasn’t opened yet, they’re taking reservations at our Kindermusik rate. All you have to do is to call Marriott Group Reservations at 866-260-1270 and ask for the KINDERMUSIK rate. Our rate, by the way, is $109 for single and double occupancy in King rooms and $115 for triple and quad occupancy in double/double rooms. To check out the Marriott City Center’s new website, click here: http://www.marriottraleigh.com/. It’s a marvelous facility, and we’re fortunate to have been able to lock in this great rate for your room! I’ve heard from a couple of you who are already registered at the hotel! Email me at cschor@kindermusik.com and let me know that you’ve reserved YOUR room for convention!
During our next Planning for Convention call, we’ll be sharing all sorts of tips and tricks, deals and steals, and web addresses that you can use in booking your airfare to convention. If you’re already searching for fares, be sure to check these THREE airports: Raleigh-Durham (RDU) / the closest airport to our convention site; Greensboro (GSO) / approx. 90 miles from Raleigh; and Charlotte (CLT) / which is about 175 miles from Raleigh, but if the airfare is “right” a nice drive down the highway won’t be all that bad!
Air isn’t the ONLY option! Have you considered checking with fellow educators in your area and booking a bus for your trip? Think about it….and if you can get 20 or more educators who are interested from your area, I’ll do the legwork in identifying a suitable vendor. Amtrak is another option, as their station is very convenient to our convention location.
So, attend the Planning for Convention call coming up on Wednesday evening, April 16, at 8:00p to learn even more. And, you’ll have the opportunity to share your ideas with others on the call as well!
Until then,
“Convention Connie”

Meet Kindermusik Educator Debbie Long!
I'm Debbie Long, from Kalamazoo , Michigan (Yes, There Really is a Kalamazoo!) and the 2008 Convention Committee Chair. You've been hearing a lot lately about Partnerships and working together. Our Committee is an example of one of the ways that Kindermusik Educators and the Employee Owners of Kindermusik International are working together to make sure you have a worthwhile Convention experience. Who is on the Convention Committee? Kindermusik Educators just like you and me:
Patty Karle - Volunteer Coordinator
Katie Henderson - Speaker Content
Jeannie Castillo - International Rep
Andrea Ringer - Logistics
Diane Colin & Julia Cobley - Local Representatives (Raleigh)
Are you excited yet? Not just One chance to save money on accommodations at Convention, but TWO chances?! A big THANK YOU to the folks at KI who extended such a generous offer to their Educators. This is just one of the many ways Educators and Employee Owners at KI work together to promote Kindermusik programs all over the world (have you noticed the new Beta features in the Teacher's Lounge, Success Path and monthly webinars?).
So, what are you doing to get ready for Convention? Me, I'm doing a couple of things. I've already been scoping out the cost of airfare and am monitoring the sites for the cheapest flight to Raleigh (RDU in airplane talk). Do I leave from my town or do I drive a little while to another airport and save some money - whichever is cheaper! Do you have frequent flyer miles? Use them. When I find that bargain I'm booking it!
Another thing I'm doing is setting my Fall class schedule now. I've already mapped out the dates and am not planning on having classes the week of Convention. What?! Cancel classes??? When you think about it - who are you doing this continuing education for? Sure, it's fun to go see old friends, meet new ones, sing and play with adults for once But, really - isn't it for your Kindermusik families that you take time away from your own families and classes? The information you bring back - tools and techniques - are ultimately for them. I think they will be quite happy that you think enough of them to go the extra mile to make sure they have the ultimate Kindermusik experience. Just think of all the hugs you'll receive when you come back.
I am really excited about this year's Kindermusik International Convention and can't wait to see you there. Any questions or suggestions? You may email me at musik4kids_kzo@sbcglobal.net. Keep checking this blog and reading your emails for more Convention information!

SECOND CHANCE DRAWING!!!
We received OVER 200 responses from you all in LESS THAN 24 hours to the drawing for a two night stay at the Marriott Raleigh Convention Center during our November convention! WOW! It sounds like this is going to be a TERRIFIC convention! Due to the TREMENDOUS response to the drawing for two nights lodging during convention, those educators who respond from #201 on up to, say, all FIVE THOUSAND OF YOU will be entered into ANOTHER drawing for ONE free night of lodging at the Marriott Raleigh Convention Center during convention.
You may ONLY enter ONCE…..so if you’ve already emailed me, there’s no need to email again! I’ve heard that some of you are also having difficulty due to our spam filter, so I’ve created a non-KI email address that you can also use for THIS promotion only: connieschor@yahoo.com, so if your first email bounces back, feel free to try this one: connieschor@yahoo.com.
Oh…and to make it a bit easier on Convention Connie when drawing time arrives, please DO include your educator number and your name in your email!
Good luck to you, and we can’t wait to see you in November!
